The New Co-op Shooter from the Makers of Control

Wed May 14 2025
A Finnish game studio known for its unique single-player adventures has ventured into the world of multiplayer gaming. This studio has a history of creating immersive action-adventure games, from the Max Payne series to Alan Wake and Control. Their latest project, a cooperative multiplayer first-person shooter, is set in the same universe as Control, specifically in the Oldest House. This game, however, is a departure from their usual style, focusing on teamwork and fast-paced action. The game features five different mission types, called "Jobs. " During a preview, three of these Jobs were played. The first, "Hot Fix, " involves repairing a broken furnace in the Oldest House. Players must fix heat transfer fans and feed the furnace with a special powder to neutralize it. This job requires quick thinking and teamwork, as players must also fend off enemy attacks. The second Job, "Sticky Note Invasion, " is a bit weirder. Players must destroy sticky notes that have taken over the Federal Bureau of Control. These notes can obstruct the player's view, adding an extra challenge. The third Job, "Ground Control, " involves dealing with a swarm of irradiated creatures in a quarry. Players must collect radioactive pearls and launch them into orbit, all while fighting off enemies. One of the standout features of this game is the ability to choose your role before each match. Players can select from three different "Crisis Kits, " each with its own unique abilities. The Splash Kit is for support, the Jump Kit is for crowd control, and the Fix Kit is for repairing objects and dealing melee damage. These kits can be upgraded with perks, allowing for a wide variety of team compositions. The game's performance is already impressive, with stunning visuals powered by the Northlight engine. However, there is still room for optimization, as some stuttering was noticed during the preview. The final version is expected to include path tracing, a more advanced form of ray tracing. This game has the potential to become a favorite among co-op shooter fans. It offers a unique blend of familiar and new elements, making it stand out in the crowded multiplayer market. However, its success will depend on how quickly the developers can respond to community feedback. A tech test is planned for later this week, which will be crucial for making final adjustments before the game's launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
