The Next Big Sci-Fi Film From Argentina Gets a Boost
ArgentinaThu Jun 11 2026
A new science fiction movie called "Bodies of Summer" is on the way, blending futuristic ideas with deep human stories. The film comes from Argentina, where director Iván Fund has built a reputation for thought-provoking storytelling. This will be his third movie with writer Martín Felipe Castagnet, who also wrote the book the movie is based on. Their past films, like "Dusk Stone" and "The Message, " have already won awards at major festivals, including Berlin and Venice.
The story is set in a world where death isn’t permanent. If someone’s body wears out, their mind can live on in a digital space before being uploaded into a new, borrowed body. The main character, Rana, comes back after a century as data—but only to find his son, now an old man, refusing to cheat death. Instead, the son chooses to let go naturally, making a bold statement against the system. The film mixes sci-fi with real emotions, asking tough questions about life, family, and what it means to truly live.
Fund isn’t new to bold themes. His earlier work, like "The Lips, " explored human connections in tough settings. Castagnet, meanwhile, is a rising star in Latin American literature, known for sharp, original writing. Their collaboration here feels like a natural next step, pushing boundaries in both film and storytelling.
Behind the scenes, Brazil’s RT Features is fully funding and producing the film. The company, led by producer Rodrigo Teixeira, has a history of backing bold, independent films—many from outside the U. S. They’ve worked with directors like Kelly Reichardt and Ira Sachs, as well as big names like James Gray and Luca Guadagnino. This project fits right into their style: ambitious, global, and unafraid to take risks.
Teixeira is also a big name in international cinema. His company has produced Oscar winners and nominees, including Brazil’s first Portuguese-language film to win Best International Feature. Right now, RT Features is riding high after premieres at Cannes, with more projects on the way—from Argentina to Lebanon. "Bodies of Summer" is just the latest in a lineup that keeps growing.
