The Palisades fire, burning through Pacific Palisades and Malibu, has grown to over 20, 000 acres with only 8% containment by Friday morning. More than 3, 000 firefighters are battling the blaze, which started near Piedra Morada Drive on Tuesday. Despite some favorable weather, strong winds are expected to pose a challenge.
The fire has damaged or destroyed over 5, 300 structures, making it the most destructive in L. A. history. The Medical Examiner’s office is investigating 10 deaths related to the fires, though the exact count in Palisades and Malibu is unclear. Spot fires in Topanga Canyon have been extinguished.
Firefighters face multiple obstacles—replenishing water supplies after running out early Wednesday, and a drone strike that grounded a firefighting plane. Evacuation orders and warnings affect nearly 320, 000 residents and 58, 000 structures. Looting arrests stand at 20, with a 6 p. m. curfew in place.
The National Guard is expected to assist with traffic control and protecting structures. The county’s alert system faced errors, sending countywide evacuation warnings meant for specific fires. Authorities are working to fix these issues.
