The Players: A Major? Not Needed

Golf fans often call The Players Championship the “fifth major, ” but not everyone agrees. Riley, who values the classic structure of golf’s championships, said he prefers to keep only four majors. He praised The Players for its world‑class field and the iconic TPC Sawgrass venue, yet he argued that adding another major would be redundant. “I am happy with four, ” he told a sports broadcast, stressing that the tournament already stands tall on its own.Davies initially entertained the idea of upgrading The Players to major status. However, after hearing Riley’s points, she changed her stance. She admitted that the tournament is already celebrated as a premier event by many on the PGA Tour, and therefore additional prestige might be unnecessary. “It’s already the best event, ” she said, concluding that keeping its current title was sufficient.
