The Power Couple's Fall from Grace

New Jersey, Englewood Cliffs, USATue Apr 22 2025
The news spread quickly: Nadine Menendez, the wife of former Senator Bob Menendez, was found guilty. The charges? Accepting bribes, along with her husband, from three businessmen in New Jersey. The courtroom was packed. The jury's decision was unanimous: guilty on all counts. This verdict came down in the same Manhattan courthouse where Bob Menendez was convicted of similar charges last year. Bob Menendez, a Democrat, is set to begin an 11-year prison sentence in June. Nadine Menendez's sentencing is scheduled for June 12, just days after her husband's imprisonment begins. The couple's legal troubles started in early 2018, when their whirlwind romance began. During a 2022 raid on their New Jersey home, FBI agents discovered a fortune in gold bars and cash hidden in unusual places. A Mercedes-Benz convertible, also allegedly a bribe, was found in the garage. The couple denies any wrongdoing, insisting they never took any bribes. Initially, Nadine and Bob Menendez were to be tried together with the three businessmen. However, Nadine's trial was delayed after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery. Bob Menendez resigned from the Senate last August following his conviction. Before the charges, he chaired the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Prosecutors claim Nadine Menendez started facilitating bribes around the time she began dating Bob Menendez. She was facing financial troubles, including nearly $20, 000 in missed mortgage payments. A friend, Wael Hana, provided cash to save her home. In return, prosecutors allege, Bob Menendez helped Hana maintain a business monopoly with the Egyptian government. Nadine Menendez also received a new car after her old one was destroyed in an accident. Prosecutors say a businessman, Jose Uribe, gave her a Mercedes-Benz. In return, Bob Menendez used his influence to pressure the New Jersey attorney general's office to stop investigating some of Uribe's associates. More cash and gold bribes were allegedly paid by Fred Daibes, a real estate developer. Prosecutors say Bob Menendez helped Daibes secure a $95 million investment from a Qatari fund. Nadine Menendez was described as crucial to the scheme, enabling communication between the senator and businessmen and Egyptian officials. Bob Menendez was also convicted of acting as an agent for the Egyptian government. Prosecutors say he ghostwrote a letter for Egyptian officials to influence his fellow senators on human rights abuses and military aid. Nadine Menendez's lawyer argued that the evidence was insufficient for a conviction. He claimed the senator's dealings with businessmen were just part of his job. However, the prosecutor urged the jury to convict, calling the evidence "consistent and overwhelming. " Uribe pleaded guilty and testified against the others. Hana and Daibes were also convicted. Hana received an eight-year prison sentence, while Daibes got seven years.
