The Power Struggle Behind Education Politics
USAThu Mar 13 2025
Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, has been vocal about her opposition to the Trump administration's plan to shut down the federal Department of Education. She claims that this move would harm children's education. However, many people believe that her concerns are more about her own influence and power.
The U. S. Department of Education is supposed to ensure that all children have access to a good public education. However, the reality is that many students in America are not getting the quality education they deserve. The United States lags behind other countries in international testing, which shows that there are serious issues with our education system.
Weingarten warns that eliminating the Department of Education would lead to fewer teachers, more crowded classrooms, and increased mental health and behavioral challenges for students. She also predicts that there would be more absenteeism and lower graduation rates. However, these claims are not backed up by evidence. The real problem is that the bloated public-education bureaucracy diverts resources away from classrooms and wastes money on ineffective approaches to behavioral issues, such as "restorative justice" instead of actual school discipline.
The truth is that chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled nationwide from 2018 to 2022, largely due to COVID closures. As for graduation rates, the teachers' union approach is to raise them by lowering requirements and eliminating standardized tests. This does not actually improve education quality; it just makes it seem like more students are graduating.
Weingarten accuses the Trump administration of diverting billions of dollars from children. However, the plan is to divert money from the unions and their pet projects so that it actually goes to educating kids. Albert Shanker, the founder of the American Federation of Teachers, once said, "When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of schoolchildren. "This quote highlights the real priorities of the union.
Randi Weingarten's career has been more about union politics than actual teaching. She barely taught in a school long enough to call herself a "teacher. "It's clear that her concerns are not about the children but about her own power and influence. Parents across the nation are starting to see through her tactics, and it's a relief to watch her power diminish.
