The Rise of CATL: A Global Power in EV Batteries
Hong KongTue May 20 2025
The world's leading electric vehicle (EV) battery producer, China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (CATL), has started trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This is a significant move, making it the largest initial public offering (IPO) of the year.
CATL is no small player. It churns out over a third of all EV batteries sold globally. Big names like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota all rely on CATL for their battery needs.
The company's shares saw a impressive jump of over 10% when trading began. This success is not just about the money; it's about the company's growing influence in the EV market.
CATL's journey started in 2011 in Ningde, a city in eastern China. Since then, it has grown rapidly, thanks to the boom in China's EV industry. Today, it employs over 100, 000 people and has 13 production plants worldwide.
The company is not just about making batteries; it's also about innovation. CATL has six research and development centres around the world. Last month, it unveiled a new battery that can be charged for 323 miles in just five minutes. This is a game-changer in the fast-charging area.
But CATL's growth has not been without controversy. In January, the US Department of Defense added the company to a list of businesses it says works with China's military. CATL denies this, claiming its inclusion on the list was a "mistake". Despite this, the company continues to expand, with plans to build its second European factory in Hungary and a $4. 3bn EV battery plant in Spain.
The US has expressed concerns about potential national security risks surrounding the Chinese company. In April, the chair of the House Select Committee on China wrote letters to the chief executives of JPMorgan and Bank of America, asking them to withdraw from working on CATL's Hong Kong listing.
However, some experts believe that the US should be looking to work with Beijing on the advancement of renewable energy. They argue that the US is rejecting some of the best technology players in the world when it comes to clean tech.
CATL's success is a testament to the growing importance of the EV market. As the world moves towards renewable energy, companies like CATL will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation.
