The Rise of Misoprostol: A Look at Self-Managed Abortions in the US
USAFri Jun 20 2025
The World Health Organization supports two types of medication abortion. Both are safe and effective. One combines two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. The other uses only misoprostol. In the US, most medication abortions use both drugs. However, political and legal pressures may change this. More people might turn to misoprostol-only abortions.
Researchers wanted to know more about this. They talked to people who used misoprostol for self-managed abortions. These people got their misoprostol from mail-order or retail pharmacies. The study took place in May and June 2020. It involved 31 in-depth interviews.
The study looked at three main areas: the medication itself, how it was delivered, and the overall care model. People's views on misoprostol were influenced by what they already knew and what they learned. Picking up misoprostol from a store felt normal. Having a prescription made it feel legitimate. Getting it by mail offered privacy.
Most people were happy with the overall experience. However, younger participants felt they needed more emotional support. This was different from older participants. The study adds to the evidence on misoprostol-only abortions and how they are delivered.
The way people get their medication matters. It shapes their experience and satisfaction. Privacy and legitimacy are important factors. So is emotional support, especially for younger people. This study highlights the need for comprehensive care. It also shows the potential of misoprostol-only abortions in the US.
People's experiences with misoprostol vary. Some find it familiar and legitimate. Others value the privacy of mail-order delivery. But everyone deserves good care. This includes emotional support, especially for younger people. The study shows that misoprostol-only abortions can be acceptable. But there is room for improvement in how they are delivered and supported.
