Walking into a new life, one that's been so carefully constructed by someone else. That's what happens to Mercedes, a humble secretary, when she's given the keys to the apartment of a famous writer-turned-murderer, Maria Carolina Geel. In 1955, Geel was released from a Chilean convent after serving a laughably short sentence for killing her lover over afternoon tea. That's the setup for Maite Alberdi's fascinating film, In Her Place, which weaves together fact and fiction in a delightful way.
At home, Mercedes is lost in a sea of her own mediocrity. Her husband, Efrain, is a bumbling photographer, their sons are idle, and her daily routine is a never-ending cycle of drudgery. But when she enters Maria's apartment, she finds a world of calm and luxury. The plants are watered, the books are read, and the bed is (thankfully) quiet. It's a fantasy come true, especially for someone who's tired of being everyone's doormat. As Mercedes explores Maria's life, she starts to construct her own identity, donning Maria's clothes and embracing her more free-spirited nature. Her friends from the convent, including an older indigenous woman who committed a crime of passion, share their stories, and Mercedes finds solace in their conversations. Even when the stakes get high, and Maria's past comes back to haunt her, Mercedes remains steadfast, a beacon of optimism in a world that often seems determined to crush her.
