Ever thought about how male flies manage their genes? Well, it's all about the male-specific lethal complex (MSL), which helps male flies make up for having one less X chromosome than females. Within this complex, MSL1 plays a crucial role, and a small part of it, the N-terminal region, is key to its stability and function. Changes in this region can weaken MSL1's ability to interact with roX2 RNA and bind to certain sites on the X chromosome.
This can be just as harmful to male flies as losing roX RNAs. Even though MSL1 can still bind to gene promoters, it finds it tough to join forces with other MSL proteins at X chromosome sites.
