The Shift in Prison Admissions: Education Now Matters More Than Race

Once upon a time, the chances of Black and White Americans ending up in prison were fairly equal, similar to the gap between those with a college degree and those without. Fast forward to today, and the picture has changed dramatically. Education, not race, has become the bigger factor in who ends up in prison. Violent crimes are now the main reason Black Americans are admitted to prisons, and the difference between Black and White Americans in prison admissions is shrinking. Meanwhile, for White Americans without a college degree, the rates of prison admissions have surged across all types of crimes.This shift is important because it adds to the growing evidence that racial gaps in American life are narrowing, but educational gaps are widening. Though it might sound like progress, there's a lot to think about. Why is higher education bringing such big changes? And why are violent crimes now the biggest driver for Black Americans in prisons?
