Industrialization is changing how people live in both eastern and western regions of China. This shift has sparked curiosity among researchers about how it affects the gut microbiome and resistome.
Imagine the gut microbiome as a tiny ecosystem living inside us. Each person has a unique mix of microbes, and industrialization is shaking things up. Researchers wanted to see how this affects the gut microbiome and resistome, which is the collection of genes that deal with antibiotics.
They looked at 1, 382 healthy people, 415 from the more industrialized east and 967 from the less industrialized west. The study found that people in the east have a wider variety of microbes in their gut, but the west has a more diverse collection of species and metabolic pathways.
The study also found that people in the west have a higher abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This means their gut microbes are more likely to be resistant to antibiotics, which is a bit of a worry.
When researchers took a closer look, they found that 12 core ARG types are shared between east and west. But the eastern populations had a higher abundance of 2 of these types, while the western populations had a higher abundance of 8 types.
For those who don't know, "Escherichia coli" (E. coli) is a bacteria that can be found in the gut. The study found that E. coli from the western populations carried more virulence factor genes (VFGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) compared to those from the eastern populations.
This study is a big deal because it's the first large-scale look at how industrialization is changing the gut microbiome and resistome in China. It gives us a better understanding of how industrialization might affect public health in the future. By understanding these changes, we can start thinking about region-specific ways to manage infections caused by pathogenic bacteria.
