The Tony Awards are a big deal in the theater world. They celebrate the best of Broadway, from plays to musicals and revivals. This year, there's a lot of buzz about who will take home the coveted awards. The nominations will be announced live on YouTube and CBS Mornings, giving fans a sneak peek at the contenders.
The Best Play category is packed with talent. Oh, Mary! and John Proctor Is The Villain are expected to be nominated. The Hills of California and English are also strong contenders. There's also talk about Cult of Love, Purpose, and Good Night, and Good Luck. Some people think Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray might get snubbed due to their high-tech elements, which is a shame because they have a lot to offer.
The Best Musical category is equally exciting. Maybe Happy Ending, Dead Outlaw, Death Becomes Her, Buena Vista Social Club, and Operation Mincemeat are the top picks. Swept Away has a dedicated fan base, but its short run might hurt its chances. It's also worth noting that there are many other categories, each with its own set of talented nominees.
The Best Play Revival category is also competitive. Glengarry Glen Ross and Eureka Day are almost guaranteed nominations. Othello and Yellow Face are also likely to be in the mix. Wild cards include Our Town, Romeo + Juliet, and Home. The Best Musical Revival category is a bit more straightforward, with Floyd Collins, Gypsy, Sunset Blvd. , and Pirates! The Penzance Musical as the top contenders. Once Upon A Mattress could be a spoiler, but it's a long shot.
The acting categories are where things get really interesting. Cole Escola is a favorite for Best Actor in a Play, thanks to their acclaimed performance in Oh, Mary! Jake Gyllenhaal, Denzel Washington, and George Clooney are also in the running. The Best Actress in a Play category features Sarah Snook, Laura Donnelly, Sadie Sink, and LaTanya Richardson Jackson. The Best Actor in a Musical category is dominated by Darren Criss, Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, and Andrew Durand. The Best Actress in a Musical category is a battle between Audra McDonald, Nicole Scherzinger, Megan Hilty, and Jennifer Simard.
The Best Featured Actor and Actress categories are also packed with talent. Kieran Culkin, Conrad Ricamora, Gabriel Ebert, and Francis Jue are all strong contenders for Best Featured Actor in a Play. Jak Malone, Danny Burstein, Christopher Sieber, and Thom Sesma are the top picks for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. The Best Featured Actress in a Play category features Kara Young, Jessica Hecht, Leanne Best, and Mare Winningham. The Best Featured Actress in a Musical category is a showdown between Natalie Venetia Belcon, Joy Woods, Bernadette Peters, Michelle Williams, and Lesli Margherita.
The Best Director categories are also worth watching. Knud Adams, Sam Mendes, Sam Pinkleton, Anna D. Shapiro, and Danya Taymor are the top contenders for Best Director of a Play. Michael Arden, David Cromer, Tina Landau, George C. Wolfe, and Jamie Lloyd are the favorites for Best Director of a Musical.
