The U. S. Boosts Taiwan's Defense with $2 Billion Arms Deal
Taiwan, ChinaSun Oct 27 2024
In a move that's expected to ruffle feathers in China, the United States has approved a major arms sale to Taiwan. The deal, valued at $2 billion, includes advanced surface-to-air missile systems and cutting-edge radar technology. This is the first time Taiwan will receive such sophisticated defense equipment from the U. S. Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te, has been focusing on bolstering the island's defenses amid growing threats from China.
Last year, China held war games around Taiwan, practicing how to block off key ports and areas. Taiwan's military counted a record number of Chinese aircraft, ships, and government vessels during these exercises. The U. S. sees strengthening Taiwan's self-defense as crucial for maintaining stability in the region.
"The U. S. is helping Taiwan protect itself, " said Taiwan's presidential spokesperson, Karen Kuo. The deal includes three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and related equipment, worth up to $1. 16 billion. Additionally, there are radar systems valued at around $828 million.
Experts note that the NASAMS system has been proven in combat, particularly in Ukraine. This will significantly enhance Taiwan's ability to defend its airspace. Despite the tensions, the U. S. continues to support Taiwan's right to self-defense, highlighting the complex relations between the three countries.
