The United Nations: A Milestone in History
Washington, USAFri Oct 25 2024
If we had a world where every country worked together for peace and progress. That's what the United Nations (UN) aims to do. Back on Oct. 24, 1945, the UN officially started its mission after 29 countries gave the green light and agreed on its rules, known as the Charter of the United Nations. This day is now remembered every year as United Nations Day. But let's not forget other big events that happened on this date.
History is full of amazing women. One of them was Jane Seymour, the third wife of England's King Henry VIII. Sadly, she passed away in 1537, just 12 days after giving birth to Prince Edward, who later became King Edward VI.
Technology has come a long way. In 1861, a big moment happened when the first message was sent across the United States from San Francisco to Washington, D. C. It was a huge deal back then!
Money matters can get crazy sometimes. On Oct. 24, 1929, there was a big panic on Wall Street when stock prices started falling, and it didn't stop easily. This is known as the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and it started on what's now called "Black Thursday. "
Bridges help connect us. In 1931, the George Washington Bridge was dedicated, linking New York City and New Jersey. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
Politics can be tough. In 1952, a famous general, Dwight D. Eisenhower, promised to end a conflict in Korea if he became president. He kept his promise and visited the country before his inauguration.
Safety is important. In 2002, two men were caught for a series of shootings in the Washington area. One of them, John Allen Muhammad, was later given the death penalty.
Speed matters, even in traveling. In 2003, the last supersonic Concorde jet had its final flight from New York to London.
Nature can be unpredictable. In 2012, a strong hurricane called Sandy hit Jamaica and Cuba before moving toward the United States.
Insects can be dangerous. In 2021, a team in Washington state destroyed the first nest of so-called "murder hornets" found in the U. S.
And let's not forget the stars! Today, we celebrate birthdays of some famous people, like rockstar Bill Wyman, who is 88, and actor F. Murray Abraham, who is 85. Then there's actor Kevin Kline, 77, and fashion designer Zac Posen, 44, among many others.
