Scottie Scheffler found himself in a tough spot at the Pebble Beach course, where the wind was fierce and the temperatures were low. During the second round, on the par-5 18th hole, the golfer's tee shot went toward beach. What happened next was part of a lucky break.
On their quest to find their ball, Scheffler had to traverse down a 5 foot rock shelf. The ball could have ended in the huge rocks or found its way under the deep waters. The challenge was extremely steep! Even with this in mind, Scheffler said he wanted to walk himself 300 yards. . His plan to eventually hit the 6 ironwent smoothly, by hitting it with a wedge out of the silt and over the cliff.
This next challenge was to find a proper opening for the green. The ball needed to hit the green at high arc to avoid it from getting lost in the deep rough.
A big question remains. Did Scheffler get lucky because of the unique characteristics of the golf course? When you think of Pebble Beach, the scenery is made up of beautiful cliffs dropped into the ocean. It isn't unheard of for golf balls to wind up on the sand or find themselves submerged! Brandt Snedeker’s beach birdie in 2019 is a new testament to this! . This hole is rockier than the typical upright gopher holes a player would traverse. It’s just in his field of play!
Yes, just two under at 70. With more experience behind his belt, Scheffler did well in the second round. He could have been up to 7 shots behind the after this event. But let's keep in mind. . . he didn't have a perfect hit for about 2 months. There is also a question as to how rusty he got playing golf.
Scottie had injured his hand over Christmas. While cutting ravioli he got a cut from a broken wine glass. He was back before we could forget about the fact he had any operation!
For the day overall, the strokes on the other side of the field didn't hit the mark. He was waving his iron around on the11th hole.
Yes, they can do it at last. . . yes thanks to the fact they could stay calm and hit cleanly. When Scottie managed to hit a 6-iron shot from 179 yards away to the back right. The took a leap with it over the rough.
No doubt, a remarkable round. When you think about it, the holes are some of the toughest in a round.
Just a moment's glance at this tournament, Scheffler had fallen behind but only took a whopping two strokes under through 70.
"I have played awful at times, he quips. "No matter where you place golfers on the gambit of who is rusty and who is not, that's saying a lot. After the last couple of days, there's still a lot to achieve. It's a game that is as fickle as it is a game of brute force!
I mean if you look at our Gains Analyst, you'd think he was in a different field of play.
