The Vanishing Workers: Federal Office Ghost Towns

Have you ever wondered where federal workers are these days? According to Senator Joni Ernst, a whopping 94% of them are either out of sight or working remotely, long after the pandemic has ended. DC's federal buildings are a ghost town, with a measly 12% occupancy rate.
What's the deal with all this? Ernst raised the question: If federal employees aren't at their desks, where are they? And how hard are they really working?
Remember when Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin disappeared from the Pentagon last December? No one noticed because the place was basically empty.
Now, let's talk about DOGE, the government efficiency panel. Headed by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, it's shining a light on these issues. The Biden administration didn't make much of a fuss about bringing workers back after federal unions protested.
Last year, Team Biden tried to push agencies to increase in-person work, but union leaders weren't having it. They said new guidelines couldn't override collective bargaining agreements.
Public-sector unions have always been a debatable topic. President Roosevelt once spoke against their power in the federal government. Ernst's work is a wake-up call to trim the fat and maybe even move some agencies out of DC.
The federal deficit won't disappear overnight, but slimming down the workforce is a step in the right direction.
