The Reggie Lewis Center is taking steps to beef up security after a tense situation at a recent track meet. On January 8th, during the Tri-Valley League track event, a group of Dedham High School athletes had a heated argument with three people not connected to the event. One of these individuals allegedly showed a gun tucked in their waistband.
The Bay State Conference, which oversees the event, quickly addressed the issue. They made it clear that no students from their member schools were involved in the confrontation, and no one was hurt. However, the incident raised concerns about safety at the venue.
Starting now, all teams entering the Reggie Lewis Center for track meets will have to go through a specific entrance on Malcolm X Boulevard. They will also pass through a new security check. Athletes and coaches will get special wristbands to wear at all times. The conference also reminded students to keep their phones and other devices ready for a quick check.
The Bay State Conference is taking this incident seriously. They plan to talk to the athletes about staying alert and reporting any issues right away. The goal is to make sure everyone can focus on the competition without worrying about safety.
This isn't the first time the Reggie Lewis Center has faced security problems. Last March, a summer jobs fair had to be shut down because of overcrowding and fights. Thankfully, no one was hurt or arrested in that incident.
The Boston Police Department is also involved. They posted a community alert asking for help in identifying the three individuals involved in the confrontation. The incident happened around 8:20 p. m. on January 8th. Police described it as an assault involving a firearm.
