Tiny Algae, Big Health Worries: The Hidden Hormone Havoc
Sat Aug 02 2025
Ever heard of cyanobacteria? They're those tiny blue-green algae that often float around in ponds. But don't let their size fool you. These little guys can pack a punch. They produce toxins that might be messing with our hormones, especially those that help with making babies.
Scientists were curious. Could these toxins act like or against male hormones? They decided to test this out on rats using something called the Hershberger bioassay. This test checks how these toxins affect certain body parts and hormone levels. The rats were given different amounts of two toxins: microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and cylindrospermopsin (CYN).
Here's where things get interesting. In one part of the test, MC-LR made the seminal vesicles heavier at the lowest dose. But in another part, it made the ventral prostate lighter. CYN had a similar effect on the glans penis. But according to the test's standards, neither toxin showed clear hormone-disrupting effects.
But wait, there's more. The toxins did change some hormone levels. Both MC-LR and CYN raised levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) at the highest dose. CYN even increased LH at the lowest dose. In the antagonist test, MC-LR lowered testosterone levels in all groups compared to the control.
So, what does this all mean? It seems that cyanotoxins might have more effects on hormones than we thought. But we need more research to understand how they affect wildlife and human health.

questions
What are the potential long-term effects of chronic exposure to MC-LR and CYN on endocrine function in humans and wildlife?
How do the observed changes in hormone levels (LH, FSH, T) correlate with the observed tissue weight changes in the Hershberger bioassay?
If cyanotoxins can mess with hormones, does that mean they could turn a male rat into a female rat, or is that just a myth?
