Tiny Tool to Spot Parenting Styles

A new short test called the PS‑4 helps researchers see how parents raise their kids. The researchers started with a long list of questions about parenting and then trimmed it down to only four items. They tested this short version with two big groups of families: one that represents all of Germany and another from the state of Lower Saxony. The first group was used to choose which four questions were best.After that, the second group confirmed that those same four questions still work well. The test fits the data very nicely and, even though it is so short, it still gives reliable results. The PS‑4 works the same way for boys and girls, whether they are parents or children. When compared to a longer parenting test, the PS‑4 gives almost identical links to child behavior problems. This shows that the short version is still trustworthy. Because it takes only a few seconds to complete, the PS‑4 is ideal for big surveys where people don’t have much time.
