Top Manhattan Prosecutor to Step Down in December

Damian Williams, the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, will be leaving his post at the end of his term in December. This news came from the U. S. Attorney’s Office in a recent announcement. Williams has held this prestigious role since 2021, when President Biden appointed him upon the recommendation of Senator Chuck Schumer. Before his current position, Williams had been the chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force in Manhattan. Williams expressed mixed feelings about his departure. He called it a "bittersweet" day, as he loves his job and the team he works with. On a positive note, he believes the office is in great shape, maintaining high standards of excellence, integrity, and independence. During Williams’ tenure, some prominent figures like New York City Mayor Eric Adams and former Senator Bob Menendez faced prosecution by his office. These cases highlight the significant role the Southern District of New York plays in legal matters. Williams' resignation will take effect at midnight on December 13, 2024.
