A Sacramento County resident is now under health watch after possibly picking up the Andes hantavirus on a flight linked to a cruise ship outbreak. The virus, which can pass between people, has already caused three deaths on the MV Hondius, a Dutch cruise ship. Officials say the infected passenger on the flight later died, though the Sacramento resident isn’t showing any signs of illness yet.
Three other Californians tied to the cruise ship are being handled differently. One returned home to Santa Clara County and is being checked daily for symptoms. The other two were moved to a medical facility in Nebraska for closer observation. All four are being tracked for 42 days, the standard time for possible hantavirus exposure.
This isn’t the usual way hantaviruses spread. Most versions, like the Sin Nombre strain found in California, only infect people through contact with rodent waste. The Andes virus, however, can jump from person to person—though it’s rare and usually needs close, long-term contact. Health experts say the risk to the public stays very low.
Where did this virus come from? The Andes strain is mostly found in parts of South America, not California. That’s why officials are watching closely—this kind of outbreak outside its usual region is unusual. Still, decades of experience in Argentina and Chile show that person-to-person spread doesn’t happen often.
So far, California has recorded nearly 100 cases of the Sin Nombre hantavirus since 1980, but none of those spread between people. This current situation is different, which is why health teams are taking extra steps. They’re checking temperatures, watching for symptoms, and advising those exposed to avoid close contact with others until the monitoring period ends.
