Tragedy Strikes: Border Agent Shot in Vermont Near Canadian Border
USA, CoventryWed Jan 22 2025
A sad day for law enforcement and the community: U. S. Border Patrol agent David Maland lost his life during a traffic stop in Vermont, close to the Canadian border. This incident, which also claimed the life of a German national and injured another suspect, took place on a busy highway in Coventry. Maland, a U. S. Air Force veteran, was assigned to the Newport Station in the Swanton Sector. This sector covers a significant portion of the U. S. -Canada border, including Vermont, parts of New York, and New Hampshire.
The shooting temporarily closed part of Interstate 91, just 20 miles from the Canadian border. The impact was felt in the small community of Orleans County, which has a population of around 27, 000 residents. The Derby Line–Rock Island Border Crossing, a major link between Vermont and the Canadian province of Quebec, is just 12 miles north of Coventry. This area has a substantial French-speaking population due to its close proximity to Canada.
The U. S. Customs and Border Protection agency expressed their condolences, stating that their thoughts and prayers are with Agent Maland's family. Governor Phil Scott and state Senator Russ Ingalls also shared their sympathies. Vincent Illuzzi, the state's attorney in neighboring Essex County, witnessed the initial traffic stop and later saw the aftermath of the shooting. He noted that the Border Patrol often works closely with local law enforcement, being the primary responders in many emergency cases.
Maland's death was a significant loss for the Border Patrol. He was the first agent to be killed in the line of duty since 2014. Previous tragedies included the botched gun operation "Fast and Furious" in 2010 and the fatal stabbing of Agent Isaac Morales in 2017.
