Tragic End to a Charitable Day

Memphis, USAWed Oct 23 2024
A Tennessee medical student, Ellie Claire Young, was tragically killed at a cancer charity walk. The 22-year-old was shot by her ex-boyfriend, Jackson Hopper, who then led police on a dangerous car chase across multiple counties. The incident happened on Saturday at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis during the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Young was inside her Jeep when Hopper, driving a white Honda CR-V, fired two shots. She got out of the vehicle but was shot again. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with some initially mistaking the gunshots for a car backfiring. Young was declared dead at the scene. Hopper fled the scene, starting a high-speed chase with police. He allegedly tried to run over a Tipton County Constable and was eventually stopped by a Dyer County deputy. Hopper resisted arrest and a gun was found in his car. He was charged with first-degree murder and other felonies. The crime is believed to be a result of a domestic dispute. Hopper pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance. A GoFundMe page set up in Young's honor had raised over $35, 000 by Tuesday morning.
