Tragic Loss: Teacher Clara Thomann Dies in Greek Hiking Accident

Clara Thomann, a 33-year-old science teacher from California, was unfortunately killed while hiking in Greece. She was on vacation in the Greek Islands with her partner, Elliot Finn, when she fell down a steep gorge near Plakias, Crete, on December 23. The fall was devastating—she plunged about 164 feet. First responders and construction workers quickly came to her aid and rushed her to a hospital in Rethymno. Despite their efforts, Thomann, who was six months pregnant, died from severe injuries a few days later. Her unborn baby, whom she had named Theodoro Clari Thomann, also did not survive the fall. Thomann was known for her kindness and dedication to teaching. She worked at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, California, and was beloved by her students and colleagues. Her family described her as someone who always put others first and loved helping and teaching others. Her partner, Elliot Finn, plans to spread her ashes in various locations across Greece and Turkey in her memory. Thomann was an organ donor, and her heart, liver, and pancreas were donated to those in need. The news of her tragic death has left her school community deeply saddened. Principal Bill Woodard said, "There are no words to describe the sadness we are all feeling. " Many parents have also shared their gratitude and memories of Thomann on CaringBridge, recalling her ability to make learning fun and her deep care for her students. Her family plans to hold a memorial service when they return to the United States at the end of the month.
