Tram Talk Turns Trouble in Milan
Milan, ItalyWed Jun 17 2026
Milan authorities have begun a formal inquiry after a WhatsApp chat among tram drivers surfaced. The group, which included around twelve operators, reportedly shared photos of female passengers taken from the city’s tram cameras. The images focused on body parts, and members made jokes about them.
The investigation is centered on claims that the drivers accessed the tram company’s IT system without permission. At least one driver is currently under scrutiny, and police have conducted several searches of homes and workstations.
The scandal erupted when a passenger on a Milan tram noticed an off‑duty driver, still wearing his uniform, looking at the phone screen. The screen displayed a private chat filled with photos and comments about women’s bodies, apparently lifted from the tram cameras. The passenger photographed the screen and later alerted an Instagram influencer, who helped bring the story to public attention.
In response, Milan’s tram operator, ATM, announced an internal review. The company said it would investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that all employees use company resources responsibly while protecting passengers.
The case highlights broader concerns about online misogyny and privacy violations. It echoes last year’s controversy when manipulated images of women, including the prime minister, were circulated on an adult website, prompting national outrage.
