Travis Knight Says AI Cannot Replace Human Heart in Movies
Travis Knight directed a movie named Wildwood. It is a stop-motion fantasy story. A young girl enters a scary forest. Her baby brother was stolen by a flock of crows. Peyton Elizabeth Lee plays the girl. The film took sixteen years to complete. Knight joked that the movie is now old enough to drive him to the event. He calls it a big adventure with real heart.
Knight shared his thoughts on AI at a recent film festival. He does not support using AI to make art. He sees technology as a helpful tool. A pencil is a tool. A paintbrush is a tool. A computer is also a tool. Tools work best when artists hold them. AI is different because it tries to replace the person making the art. Knight says a machine cannot explain what it means to be human. It has never felt love. It has never felt pain. It has never felt loss.
Knight does not think AI would have sped up the making of Wildwood. The thought of that makes him angry. Today, many people want everything to be fast and simple. Knight believes that misses the point. Real human feeling matters. Stop-motion animation shows care and devotion. It needs time. A computer cannot copy that kind of effort.
The cast includes many well-known actors. Jacob Tremblay, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Carey Mulligan, Maya Erskine, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Amandla Stenberg, and Tantoo Cardinal all appear in the film. Bassett recorded her part during COVID. She said she wanted to leave the house and start being creative again. It felt like the right moment.
