2025 was quite a year for the Treasure Coast, packed with events that kept everyone talking. From protests to political drama, and even some shocking crimes, there was never a dull moment. Let's dive into some of the biggest stories that shaped the year.
First off, there were some serious protests happening. People took to the streets in places like Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach, and Stuart to voice their disapproval of the Trump administration. The No Kings protest in Vero Beach on October 18th was especially notable, with over 3, 000 people showing up to make their voices heard.
Then there was the story of Ryan Routh, who was found guilty of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump. It was a big deal, and the trial had everyone on the edge of their seats. Routh was found guilty on all five charges, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate and possessing a firearm as a felon.
The government shutdown also had a big impact on the Treasure Coast. When it started on October 1st, certain federal services began to shut down, like the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Vero Beach. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, saw a surge in demand, with food banks and pantries bracing for up to 80, 000 people needing assistance.
The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, also made waves. It debuted earlier in the year, and its effects were felt quickly. Seven HUD contractors lost their jobs, and the USDA cut $1 billion in federal programs that allowed schools and food banks to buy fresh food from local farmers and ranchers.
City elections were also a big deal in 2025. Residents of Fellsmere, Fort Pierce, Ocean Breeze, and Vero Beach elected their leaders in a November 4th election. The most contentious race was in Fort Pierce, which ended in a runoff. Voters will return to the polls on January 13th to choose between Chris Dzadovsky and Jaimebeth Galinis.
In St. Lucie County, there were some major stories as well. Former Fort Pierce City Commissioner James Taylor was arrested and faces 22 felony charges related to an alleged explicit internet relationship with a minor. Port St. Lucie Sgt. Erik LeVasseur was shot twice in the face while responding to a disturbance, but he is expected to survive, though he may be blind.
In Indian River County, the Lake Mary Rams stunned Vero Beach with a Hail Mary pass to win the Class 7A state football championship. The Florida Attorney General also launched an investigation into Vero Beach Vice Mayor Linda Moore for hosting a Pride Tea Dance at the Kilted Mermaid bar-restaurant she owns.
And in Martin County, the Stuart City Council fired City Manager Michael Mortell without cause, and the Cleveland Clinic closed Martin North Hospital's labor and delivery unit, the only hospital birthing service in Martin County.
