Trends in Evangelical Views on Trump’s Policies

Washington DC, USAFri Jun 12 2026
Recent polling shows that about half of evangelical Christians feel the Trump administration’s actions on Iran and immigration clash with their Christian beliefs. The survey, conducted from June 3 to 8, found that 54% of evangelicals think the military stance toward Iran contradicts Christian teachings, while 41% believe it aligns. On immigration, 51% view the policy as inconsistent with Christian values and 44% see it as consistent. Trump’s overall favorability among evangelicals stands at 52%, down from 61% earlier in the year but still higher than his 35% approval among all adults. The dip is linked to rising fuel prices caused by the Iran conflict, which many voters associate with Trump’s foreign policy. During his first term, Trump achieved a major evangelical goal: securing a conservative majority on the Supreme Court that overturned a decision establishing a nationwide abortion right. He also invited faith leaders to the Oval Office and allowed federal employees to express religious views at work.
Evangelicals overwhelmingly lean Republican, with a ratio of more than two to one. In the 2024 election, they gave Trump an 81% to 16% split according to exit polls. White House spokespersons have highlighted his record on religious rights and support for anti‑abortion activists. However, the upcoming midterms may expose cracks in this bloc. A 63‑year‑old evangelical from Indiana said she would not vote for Trump again, citing her daughter’s lost Medicaid benefits and a belief that war is not always the solution. She urged leaders to pray more than speak. The Iran war began on February 28, aiming to prevent the Iranian government from developing nuclear weapons. Thousands have died: over 3, 000 in Iran, more than 1, 800 in Lebanon, and over 100 in Iraq. Evangelicals are split on whether the U. S. has a moral duty to protect Israel, a key ally. Some evangelicals argue that supporting Israel is biblically justified and that governments can preemptively defend themselves. Others see the war as a departure from Christian principles of peace and compassion. Overall, while Trump remains popular among many evangelicals for certain policy wins, significant portions of the group question his approach to war and immigration, hinting at potential shifts in future elections.
