Troops Lost in Gaza Amidst Shaky Peace
Middle EastWed Jun 25 2025
A fragile truce between Israel and Iran seems to be holding, but tensions remain high. The ceasefire, which started on Tuesday after 12 days of conflict, has given a glimmer of hope for lasting peace. However, Iran has made it clear that it won’t abandon its nuclear program, and its parliament is pushing to limit cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In the midst of this, seven Israeli soldiers were killed in Gaza. Their armored vehicle was hit by an explosive in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza. This incident happened just a day after reports of Israeli forces and drones firing on Palestinians waiting for aid, resulting in at least 44 deaths.
The ceasefire is far from stable. French President Emmanuel Macron has called it "volatile and fragile, " urging renewed diplomatic efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, U. S. President Donald Trump has praised the ceasefire, claiming it is going "very well. " However, leaked U. S. intelligence reports suggest that American strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities only set back the program by a few months, not the years Trump has claimed.
Iran’s Defense Minister, Aziz Nasirzadeh, is in China for a security forum, highlighting Iran’s international alliances. Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi has condemned Iran’s attack on a U. S. base in Qatar and stressed the importance of sticking to the ceasefire.
The war has taken a heavy toll. In Gaza, Palestinians are frustrated that their conflict has dragged on for nearly two years, while the Israel-Iran war ended in just 12 days. Meanwhile, Israel claims to have killed a key figure in Lebanon who was allegedly funding Hezbollah.
The head of the U. N. nuclear agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, has suggested that Iran could rebuild its damaged nuclear infrastructure. He also expressed hope for resuming inspections in Iran soon.
China, a close ally of Iran, has called for a lasting ceasefire to promote stability in the Middle East. However, Iran’s Parliament is moving to limit cooperation with the IAEA, making oversight of its nuclear program more difficult.
In a separate incident, Israeli forces killed a 66-year-old Palestinian woman in east Jerusalem. Hamas has claimed responsibility for an attack on Israeli soldiers in Gaza, though it’s unclear if this is linked to the deaths of the seven soldiers.
Iran has executed three more prisoners for allegedly spying for Israel, raising concerns about human rights abuses. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes in Iran have reportedly killed at least 1, 054 people, according to a human rights group.
