Tropical Rivers Weathering: A Study on Karamana and Vamanapuram Basins

In the heart of India's Western Ghats, two small rivers, Karamana and Vamanapuram, are doing big things. These rivers flow through the Southern Granulite Terrain, a region known for its unique geology. The rivers' chemical makeup is influenced by several factors.
Scientists took water samples from both rivers. They collected 36 samples from each river across three different seasons. This data was used to understand the rivers' chemical behavior. They looked at things like how fast rocks break down and how much carbon dioxide the rivers absorb.
The study found that silicate weathering is the main process happening in these rivers. This is when rocks break down and release minerals into the water. The Karamana River Basin showed higher rates of this process. It also absorbs more carbon dioxide than the Vamanapuram River Basin. This is important because it helps regulate the climate.
The Karamana River Basin has steeper terrain and a humid climate. This leads to more physical weathering, especially during the monsoon season. Physical weathering is when rocks break down due to physical forces like wind or water. The Vamanapuram River Basin, on the other hand, experiences less of this type of weathering.
The study also looked at the energy needed for these weathering processes. It found that both rivers require less energy for silicate weathering than expected. This suggests that the weathering process is quite intense in these rivers.
The findings highlight the complex relationship between weathering processes, climate, and the physical landscape of the region. Understanding these processes is crucial for predicting how these rivers will respond to changes in climate and land use.
