Trump and Zelenskyy's Tense Meeting: What Really Happened
Washington D.C., USAMon Mar 03 2025
In a heated televised meeting, President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy clashed over how to end the war in Ukraine. Trump warned that if a deal wasn't reached, the U. S. would pull out its support. He threatened that Ukraine would face a grim future without American backing.
The tension didn't stop there. Vice President Vance accused Zelenskyy of being disrespectful and not showing enough gratitude for U. S. support. This accusation didn't hold water. Zelenskyy had thanked the U. S. multiple times, both before and after Trump took office. For instance, after a phone call with Trump in February, Zelenskyy posted on social media expressing his gratitude. He also thanked the U. S. during a press conference and after the Oval Office meeting.
Vance also claimed that Zelenskyy campaigned for the opposition in Pennsylvania. This is false. Zelenskyy visited a Pennsylvania ammunition plant in September. He was there to thank workers producing munitions for Ukraine, not to campaign. He met with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, then-Sen. Bob Casey, and then-Rep. Matt Cartwright, all Democrats. Zelenskyy also met with then-President Joe Biden and then-Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House during the same trip. He even met with Trump in New York.
Trump made a bold claim about the amount of money the U. S. has given to Ukraine. He said it was $350 billion. This is way off. The actual amount is around $175 billion to $185 billion. Ukraine Oversight, a website run by the special inspector general for Operation Atlantic Resolve, reported that as of September 30, 2024, the U. S. had spent $183 billion on Ukraine.
The meeting ended with no joint news conference. Trump took to social media to criticize Zelenskyy, saying he wasn't ready for peace if the U. S. was involved. This was a strange claim, given that Zelenskyy had repeatedly expressed his desire for a just and lasting peace.
The clash in the Oval Office was just the latest in a series of misleading statements from Trump about Ukraine. He had previously claimed that Zelenskyy started the war, a claim that was quickly debunked.
The meeting highlighted the deepening rift between the U. S. and Ukraine. It also raised questions about the future of U. S. support for Ukraine. The situation is complex, and it's important to look at all the facts.
