Trump Stubbling EV Charging Stations, Can They Still Run?
Mon Feb 10 2025
Recent moves by the Trump administration to slow down the electric car charging infrastructure might block the government from using funds. The plan was to direct states to stop EV charging infrastructure projects, using funds allocated under the former president Joe Biden. Trump has described this federal funding for electric vehicle chargers as a waste of taxpayer money but the demand by EV owners will continue to push growth in the charging network, regardless of federal funding.
To cut things short, the administration asked states to pause their EV charging projects. They believe it is not going to be an easy task. State governors like those of Alabama and Rhode Island set the ball rolling before Trump asked but this new memo means that states with projects in the works will take a pause and they don't know if they are going to be able to proceed and request reimbursement.
The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula program, commonly known as NEVI, was created to aid in filling the gaps in the EV charging infrastructure.
This infrastructure development will make it easier for EV drivers to travel long distances since charging stations will be close by. The program provides the states with $5 billion over five years. However, the states have been facing hurdles in permitting delays, complicated electrical upgrades and contracts.
The fight is not over yet for sure. The states are under no obligation to stop the EV charging projects. Some suggest that the plan is bound to start legal battles.
EV range concerns are still primary and the federal buildout is only one of the efforts to build EV charging.
EV drivers are the ones who will be affected most by this. They fear that this will put the U. S. auto industry further behind.
Private companies have also invested billions on this infrastructure as well. Industry experts believe that the demand from drivers for EV chargers will propel companies to build more of them.
