President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Friday that his swearing-in ceremony would be held indoors, in the Capitol Rotunda, because of an expected Cold Snap in Washington, D. C. This marks the first time in four decades that a presidential inauguration will not be held outdoors.
Moving the event indoors means fewer people will be able to attend and witness the ceremony live. It also skirts the potential issue of smaller crowds due to harsh weather conditions. After his first inauguration in 2017, Trump was upset by reports suggesting that his crowd size was smaller than that of President Obama's 2009 inauguration.
Trump warned about the extreme weather conditions, where the temperatures could hit record lows. His primary concern was the safety of law enforcement officers, first responders, police K9 units, and even horses. Additionally, there were hundreds of thousands of supporters who would be exposed to the harsh conditions for hours. Despite the shift indoors, Trump advised attendees to bundle up if they still planned to come.
