President-elect Donald Trump seemed to be having a bit of fun at Canada's expense. He kept calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the "governor" of Canada. This wasn't just a slip of the tongue. He did it even when talking about Canada's Finance Minister, Christie Freeland, who had recently left her post. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to share his thoughts. He wrote, "The Great State of Canada is in shock as their Finance Minister is out, thanks to Governor Justin Trudeau. Her behavior was awful and made deals tough for Canadian citizens. She won't be missed! "
But not everyone found Trump's playful jabs amusing. CNN anchor Jim Sciutto pointed out that Canada has been a loyal ally to the U. S. They fought alongside each other in World War II, the Korean War, and even in Afghanistan after 9/11. Canadian troops did some of the toughest jobs and suffered heavy losses. Sciutto questioned why Trump would antagonize such a close neighbor and long-standing treaty partner. It's not the first time Trump has used nicknames in a playful, yet potentially offensive, way. India Today reported that Trump had previously referred to Trudeau as "governor" after suggesting Canada could become the 51st U. S. state if it couldn't handle U. S. tariffs.
