Trump's Shift in Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
Washington, USAMon May 19 2025
The recent developments in the Ukraine-Russia conflict have taken a surprising turn. After a lengthy call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, U. S. President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would start peace negotiations right away. However, it seems Trump is stepping back from his role as a mediator. He stated that the two countries should handle the negotiations themselves, as they know the details best.
Putin, on the other hand, was more cautious. He mentioned that Russia is ready to work with Ukraine on a memorandum for future talks, which could include a temporary ceasefire. However, he did not signal any major changes in Russia's stance on the war. Putin's main goal remains to address the root causes of the crisis, which likely means his demands have not changed. Last week, Russian negotiators demanded that Ukraine withdraw from significant territories, including key cities.
Trump also shared his conversation with Putin with several other world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and the European Commission. Reports suggest that these leaders were taken aback by Trump's account of the call, noting that he seemed unwilling to pressure Putin more strongly.
The phone call between Trump and Putin came after Putin declined to attend peace talks in Turkey, which he had initially proposed. This move led Trump to comment that significant progress was unlikely until he and Putin met face-to-face. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have been ramping up, with Russia and Ukraine holding direct talks in Istanbul just days before. Despite Trump's vow to end the war quickly if re-elected, achieving peace has been challenging, with both sides still far apart.
European leaders are worried. They fear that Trump might make a deal with Putin that favors Russia's demands, potentially harming Ukraine's interests in the process. The situation remains complex, with many uncertainties about how the peace talks will unfold.
