He said that if he wins the upcoming election, he plans to fire special counsel Jack Smith, who has been investigating and charging him with federal crimes. This came up in a conversation with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. Trump claims he would do this within seconds of taking office. He believes he has immunity from the Supreme Court and calls Smith "crooked. " Trump doesn't think Democrats would try to impeach him for firing Smith, even if they control the House. Smith's office has not commented on Trump's remarks. If fired, it could stop the federal government from prosecuting Trump. Smith is currently pursuing two cases against Trump - one in Florida about classified documents and another in Washington, D. C. about election interference. Trump has been trying to delay court proceedings in the election interference case by claiming presidential immunity. The Supreme Court ruled on this in July, but no trial date has been set yet. Judge Tanya Chutkan recently released some redacted documents related to the case. Trump has criticized both Chutkan and Smith, calling them "evil" and a "sick puppy. " This led to a gag order, preventing Trump from making statements about witnesses or prosecutors. Last year, Trump warned that Smith and other Justice Department officials could end up in a mental institution if he wins the election. In response to Trump's threats, California Democrat Adam Schiff introduced a bill to prevent a president from dismissing a criminal case against themselves. However, this bill is unlikely to pass in the Republican-controlled House.
