Trump's Trade War: A New Twist
Fri Feb 14 2025
Trump has a new plan to shake up global trade. He wants to hit back at countries that charge high tariffs on American goods. This means countries like Brazil, India, Japan, Canada, and the EU could face extra taxes on their exports to the US. Trump's idea is to make tariffs fair by matching what other countries charge the US. This could lead to big changes in how countries trade with each other.
Trump's plan could start as early as April 2. This has already made other countries nervous, and they might start talking to the US to avoid these new taxes. The dollar has been a bit weaker since Trump announced his plan, and the US 10-year Treasury yield has gone up to 4. 535 per cent. Experts are still unsure if these changes will actually happen.
This week, Trump also tried to change the world's political map. He talked to Russia and Ukraine about ending the war. He even invited Russia back to the G7 group of wealthy nations. Trump also had some tough words for the EU, saying they've been unfair to American companies. He even called the EU "very nasty. "
Trump met with India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He praised Modi but also criticized India for high tariffs. Trump wants to sell more US oil, gas, and defence products to India to reduce the trade deficit. He also wants to start talks to fix trade issues that have been around for years.
Trump's plan goes against many global trade rules. He might use special laws to make it happen. He also wants to add more tariffs on cars, chips, and medicines. Trump has already put taxes on Chinese imports and steel and aluminium from other countries. He plans to add more taxes on these items soon.
