Trump's U-Turn on Russia Sanctions: What's the Deal?
Washington, USATue Nov 18 2025
Donald Trump, the U. S. president, has had a change of mind about sanctions on Russia. He's now willing to sign a bill that enforces these penalties, but there's a catch. Trump insists on having the final say on any sanctions that get implemented.
This shift comes after Trump supported Republican lawmakers crafting the sanctions bill. The bill aims to penalize countries trading with Russia, particularly those purchasing its energy exports. This move is a response to Russia's lack of cooperation in peace negotiations with Ukraine.
However, the White House has specific demands. They want the bill to include language that ensures Trump retains ultimate control over any sanctions. Without this provision, Trump might not put his signature on the bill.
The bill has been stalled in Congress. This is partly because Trump has been more focused on imposing tariffs on goods from India. India is the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, following China.
A White House official confirmed that Trump is now ready to support the bill. However, they emphasized that the president wants to maintain control over the sanctions. The official stated, "The White House and the president have always emphasized the need for a provision in the sanctions package that guarantees the president has the final say on the sanctions. "
Meanwhile, the White House continues to engage in discussions with Russia about ending the conflict. However, these talks have received less attention. This is due to the numerous other pressing issues in the news.
