In Rochester, a 23-year-old woman named Sesen Tesfay accepted responsibility for a fire that damaged a church, costing over $4. 4 million in repairs. This happened back in April 2022 at Peace United Church of Christ. Investigators pieced together the facts, finding that Tesfay broke into the church using a landscaping rock to shatter a window. They discovered a large sanitizer bottle inside, which they believed was used to help spread the fire.The investigators used advanced detective work to catch her. They fetched a "geo-fence" warrant for her mobile device, which was near the church during the fire. Later, police searched her home and found items stolen from the church, including computer monitors and labeled bins. Tesfay’s DNA matched samples from the crime scene, sealing the case. Tesfay pled guilty to one count of first-degree arson. As part of the deal, other charges like burglary and theft were dropped. She is now waiting for sentencing in February.
