Turkey Pushes for Peace Talks After Iran Conflict Escalates

Ankara, TurkeyTue Mar 03 2026
Turkey is working with many groups to stop the fighting in Iran and bring back talks, said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. He also mentioned that Ankara is talking with Oman about the same goal, as the Gulf country shares the aim of ending hostilities. The United States and Israel carried out air strikes against Iran on Saturday, which led Tehran to hit Gulf states that host U. S. bases and Israel to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Turkey, a NATO member that borders Iran, has for weeks urged Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement on the nuclear program and missile issues. The Turkish government warned that more instability could hurt the whole region. During a Ramadan dinner, Fidan told Turkish media that Turkey is carefully carrying out necessary actions with all partners to achieve peace. He stressed the importance of keeping Iran and the region stable. “There isn’t a single‑layered negotiation, there is a multi‑layered negotiation, ” he said. “We have been talking to the Europeans for a few days… If you want peace, let’s work together. We are urging them to take action. The Gulf nations are now facing a serious situation. ”
He added that talks with Oman’s foreign minister are ongoing and that Turkey is also in contact with the United States. President Tayyip Erdogan, speaking strongly against the attacks on Iran, called them a “clear violation” of international law. Fidan warned that the conflict could spread across the region and affect energy supplies. He noted that closing the Hormuz Strait, where a fifth of global oil trade passes by Iran’s coast, might push the U. S. to seek quick results. He said Iran was trying to create costs for the U. S. and its partners by attacking Gulf states and energy infrastructure, but he doubted Tehran could achieve its desired outcome this way. “By bombing these places, Iran will say they should pressure the United States and end the war, but that doesn’t seem like it will happen, ” he added. He also suggested Iran might target Israel with missile strikes instead.
