Twenty years ago, the Roundtable on Obesity Solutions (ROOS) was born. This unique group brings together everyone from scientists to ordinary folks affected by obesity. Their goal? To tackle this public health challenge from every angle. In its first decade, ROOS focused on starting conversations, gathering varied perspectives, and publishing key insights. But in 2020, they took it up a notch. Using systems science, they crafted a roadmap focusing on the deeper causes of obesity and how to fix them. This plan highlighted major issues like structural racism, social norms, and how health messages are communicated.
ROOS has made lots of progress, especially in areas like fairness and reducing obesity stigma. But there's still work to do. Too many tools for preventing and treating obesity aren't being used enough. Moving forward, ROOS suggests: bringing more people access to these tools, figuring out how to best use new tech in obesity care, dealing with fairness, education, and stigma issues, and considering the impact of local cultures, policies, and social norms. The hope is that the past 10 years' lessons will drive even more progress in the next decade.
