The U. S. and Brazil have been talking trade, and it seems like they're getting along better now. Jamieson Greer, the U. S. Trade Representative, said that President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have had some good chats about it. But Greer also said that both sides need to give a little to make a deal happen.
Greer didn't say when or what kind of deal might come out of these talks. But he did say that Brazil has been a tough but important trade partner for the U. S. There are some issues, like Brazil's tariffs and things like deforestation in the Amazon, that the U. S. is looking into.
Things between the two countries have been better lately. Trump recently cut some high tariffs on Brazilian food stuffs, like coffee and fruits. He had put those tariffs in place earlier to punish Brazil for something that happened with a former Brazilian president.
Trump and Lula talked on the phone last week. They discussed trade, the economy, and even fighting crime. Lula said he expects more tariff cuts. But Trump also has some concerns about how Brazil uses its laws and courts.
Lula has been clear that Brazil won't give up its sovereignty. He said this at the UN General Assembly. He also said that the U. S. should arrest a Brazilian businessman living in Miami if it wants to help Brazil fight crime. Lula called this man one of the big bosses of Brazilian organized crime.
