U. S. –Iran Skirmishes Escalate as Ceasefire Falters

The U. S. and Iran have exchanged air attacks for a second consecutive day, breaking the fragile truce that had been in place since April. A U. S. Apache helicopter was shot down near the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week, sparking a chain reaction of strikes on both sides. President Trump warned that more bombing would follow if Tehran does not sign a peace agreement immediately, a threat that pushed oil prices up by nearly $3. U. S. forces targeted Iranian military surveillance, communications and air defense sites in retaliation for what Washington described as “unwarranted aggression. ” The Central Command reported the strikes were finished about four hours after they began, shortly after midnight in Tehran. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched counter‑attacks on 18 U. S. military targets, including bases in Kuwait and Bahrain and the Fifth Fleet’s headquarters. They also fired 12 ballistic missiles at a U. S. base in Jordan on two consecutive nights. Kuwait and Bahrain reported their air defenses intercepted hostile aircraft, with no major damage to U. S. assets.The U. S. denied that the Strait of Hormuz was closed, saying commercial ships were still passing through despite Iranian threats. Iran warned it would fire on any vessel attempting to transit the strait, and claimed two U. S. ships were targeted. Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities, including Sirik, Bandar Abbas and Karaj. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth framed the strikes as a move to force Iran into negotiations, stating that “if we need to negotiate with bombs, we’ll negotiate with bombs. ” Despite the president’s repeated claims that a deal is near, no breakthrough has emerged and the conflict continues to disrupt global oil supplies. The war has already killed thousands, with Iran blocking traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the U. S. maintaining its own blockade on Iranian ports. In Lebanon, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah persists, with Israeli airstrikes killing at least 13 people. Iran’s demands for an end to Israeli attacks, lifting of sanctions, release of frozen assets and recognition of its control over the strait remain unchanged.
