The potential addition of UConn to the Big 12 has sparked controversy and ongoing discussions among the league's presidents, as reported by CBS Sports. Currently, six out of sixteen Big 12 schools support UConn's addition, while two are against it. However, a super majority of at least twelve schools is required to approve the move. With only three more schools needed to block the move, the decision remains uncertain.
The addition of UConn to the Big 12 could have significant financial implications. TV partner Fox opposes the move, as it would devalue the Big East's contract and require amending the Big 12's $2. 3 billion contract with ESPN. However, ESPN, the other media rights partner, would support the move, potentially interested in acquiring UConn basketball rights.
UConn's presentation to Big 12 officials outlines a plan for the school to join all sports except football by 2026, with football joining in 2031 after meeting financial benchmarks.
UConn's potential addition raises concerns about the conference's strength of schedule and the uncertainty of the House v. NCAA settlement. Some Big 12 CEOs are reluctant about the possibility of adding up to $23 million per year in revenue sharing for FBS schools, questioning whether all 16 members could fully fund such a distribution. Meanwhile, others are concerned about UConn's financial status as one of the most heavily subsidized public FBS athletic departments in the country.
These discussions are separate from the league's ongoing consideration of public equity money, with CVC projecting that Big 12 media rights will at least double by 20312031.
