UK Doctors Debate Best Blood Thinner for Heart Rhythm Episodes
The most frequent rule was to begin anticoagulation after 24 hours of an episode. However, many doctors set lower limits or used individual plans. Nearly half of the group didn't factor in the total number of episodes. The standard CHA2DS2-VA score threshold also varied widely. Some used a threshold of 2, others used 1. Extra heart monitoring was done rarely. Direct oral anticoagulants were the clear favorite. Apixaban was chosen most often, at 73.7 percent of cases.
These findings prove that UK practice is quite inconsistent. There is still no solid guidance on the best approach. The study highlights the need for clear evidence-based thresholds. Consistent rules could help doctors make smarter choices. More research is needed to settle these debates.
