UK Leader Faces Heat Over Ambassador Choice
London, United KingdomTue Apr 21 2026
A former senior diplomat says he felt “continuous pressure” from the Prime Minister’s team to hurry up on appointing a new U. S. ambassador, adding fuel to the debate that could threaten the leader’s position.
The controversy centers on Labour veteran Peter Mandelson, whose past ties to a convicted U. S. sex offender have raised doubts about his suitability for Britain’s top diplomatic post in Washington.
The Prime Minister has admitted he made a mistake and regrets the appointment, but blames senior officials for not telling him that a security review had recommended against Mandelson.
The former foreign ministry official, who left office after the Prime Minister and the foreign secretary lost confidence in him, claims that his office was “under constant pressure” to place Mandelson quickly.
He says the review team warned that the appointment was a borderline case and likely to be rejected, yet this warning never reached the Prime Minister’s office.
The remarks are expected to intensify calls for the leader to resign, even as his party holds a strong majority and faces upcoming local elections.
Party members have cautioned that removing the leader now could hurt election prospects, but critics of the Prime Minister’s inner circle remain uneasy about its “bunker‑style” operations and lack of transparency.
