UK Says It Won’t Join US Blockade of Iran

Strait of HormuzMon Apr 13 2026
The United Kingdom has decided not to take part in the U. S. plan to block Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. British warships and soldiers will not be used to stop ships from entering or leaving Iran. However, UK minesweepers and drone‑fighting systems will keep working in the area. The British government says it still backs free navigation through the strait. It believes keeping the waterway open is vital for the global economy and helps people at home with living costs. The decision comes after U. S. President Donald Trump announced a blockade following failed talks with Iran in Islamabad. The U. S. Central Command confirmed it will enforce the blockade fairly, stopping only ships that try to go in or out of Iranian ports. It will not block vessels traveling between other countries. Commercial sailors will receive a formal notice before the blockade begins.
Trump mentioned that other nations might join the blockade, but he did not name them. He also said NATO could help clear the strait and that it would be open again soon. Trump claimed that the U. S. would use minesweepers and that the UK, a NATO member, might do so too. About 20 percent of world oil and gas moves through the Strait. Iran has been blocking it since U. S. and Israeli attacks began on February 28. The UK has repeatedly urged the strait to reopen, especially as oil prices rise because of Iran’s embargo. In a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, the British prime minister highlighted the need for a broad coalition to protect free navigation. The UK government also warned that ships crossing the strait should not face new tolls. Reports say Iran wants $2 million in fees for tankers that pass through.
