This scenario has become more likely since the election results, where Donald Trump and the Republican party took control. Trump has suggested that U. S. aid to Ukraine might decrease, which is worrying for European leaders who're already supporting Ukraine's military efforts.
Ukraine has been relying on military and financial aid from both the U. S. and Europe. According to a study by the Kiel Institute of Economy, Europe has committed about 241 billion euros ($255 billion) while the U. S. has committed around 119 billion euros. Germany, as Ukraine's largest donor, has shown strong support, but not all European countries are on board.
Europe could indeed step in if U. S. aid dries up. They could use profits from frozen Russian assets, which are mainly controlled by Europe. Some experts think this could be a game-changer. The EU could also explore new ways to finance Ukraine's military, like buying American weapons with a tariff relief.
Experts believe it's a political choice for Europe to decide how much they want to support Ukraine. They have the resources but need the resolve to use them. If European countries work together, they can significantly strengthen Ukraine's defense.
