In a harsh twist of winter, Ukraine's Dnipro region is grappling with a massive power outage. Over half a million homes are left shivering without heat or electricity. This isn't just a temporary glitch. It's a direct result of Russian strikes targeting key energy infrastructure overnight.
Crews are working around the clock to fix the damage. But it's not easy. They're racing against time and freezing temperatures. The local power company, DTEK, says they're doing their best to get things back online. Yet, new air-raid warnings keep slowing them down.
This isn't the first time Russia has targeted Ukraine's power grid. For the past three winters, they've been using this tactic to weaken Ukrainian resolve. This winter, they're also going after gas infrastructure. It's a double whammy, leaving people without electricity or heating.
The mayor of Dnipro declared a state of emergency. President Zelensky is calling on allies for more support. He's urging them to speed up the supply of air defense systems. He's also accusing Russia of stalling in peace talks.
The attacks started Wednesday night. While temperatures were already below freezing. Air defenses managed to shoot down 31 Russian drones. But not before they caused damage to infrastructure in three districts.
Nearby, the Zaporizhzhia region also faced power outages. But most of it was restored by Thursday morning. Ukraine is bracing for even colder weather. Temperatures are expected to drop to minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit at night.
